Try this 'Star' method:
Pick out a bright star.
Look along a stick, like sighting a rifle.
Prop your elbows to keep them steady.
After a minute or two, the star will have moved:
If the star has moved LEFT: You are facing NORTH.
Star to RIGHT: South
Star UP: East 
Star DOWN: West
OR :Place a stick in the ground
Mark with a stone or scratch the end of the shadow.
From time to time during the day, mark the end of the shadow.
